As I sit down to reflect on the past few months, I’m filled with a blend of emotions—some uplifting, others difficult to process.
My journey with World Sailing, particularly in my role as Para Manager, has been nothing short of a challenge to myself to grow as a leader, as a coach, and as a guide for Para inclusive sailing. Yet, alongside the incredible highs, I’ve encountered moments of intense frustration. I’ve questioned whether I’m truly making the impact I envisioned when I set out to support the sailing community, especially those facing challenges and the sailors with disabilities I’ve grown so passionate about representing.

This year, my main objective was to implement the Inclusive Development Program (IDP) across multiple regions, running six clinics to foster a more accessible and inclusive future for sailing. The ambition was clear: to help transform the sport into something welcoming for all. In 2023, we ran 3 highly successful clinics in the Hague, Singapore and Italy, so it was clear that the model could work and had potential. However, as the months passed, I found myself falling short of that goal. Missing the target has been a tough reality to face—one that stings because of my deep belief in the potential of this initiative. But I’m determined not to let this setback define me.
I’ve realised that the path to meaningful change is rarely smooth, and the challenges we face aren’t insurmountable. They require persistence, resilience, and above all, collective effort. To those who share my passion for the sport, I urge you to join me in reigniting a culture of support and collaboration. Together, we can ensure sailing is a space where everyone feels welcome, no matter their background or abilities.
This year has also brought unexpected personal challenges, including health struggles that have tested my endurance. Thankfully, I’m too stubborn to let them slow me down. And for that, I owe immense gratitude to two amazing friends who have had hands on my back, guiding me through the tough times with unwavering support. Their presence has been a reminder of how vital it is to have people in your corner when life gets difficult.
For those of you who have followed my journey, you’ll know how committed I am to advocating for sailors with disabilities. This commitment recently thrust me into a fight I never imagined I’d have to take on in 2024: challenging outdated perceptions of how athletes with disabilities should be treated. It’s disheartening to confront these entrenched views, but I’ve never been one to shy away from a battle when I know it’s the right one. Change is not just possible—it’s necessary. And I won’t stop fighting until we see real, lasting progress.
Amidst these challenges, I’ve also made room for joy and celebration. My recent birthday was one for the books—an escape room adventure with a nautical twist! With my closest friends, we entirely confused and stuck in a pirate ship, fuelled by laughter, teamwork, and a shared sense of adventure. Following that up with a fantastic dinner, I was reminded of just how lucky I am to be surrounded by such incredible, supportive people. They made sure this birthday was a special one, and I’m truly grateful for each of them.

On the professional front, I’ve also been updating my First Response Emergency Care (FREC) 4 qualifications. Keeping my skills sharp has always been a priority, not only for personal growth but to ensure I’m prepared to step in when needed. Thankfully, I haven’t forgotten how to be a medic! Now, I’m back in action, ready to tackle emergencies with my trusty stethoscope and kit bags in tow.

Another major highlight of these past few months was my opportunity to speak on the foredeck stage at the Southampton Boat Show. Being able to share my insights and passion for sailing, and to share the message of inclusivity and what the future looks like for Para Inclusive Sailing was both an honour and a privilege. The energy at the show was electric, and I’m still buzzing from the chance to engage with so many passionate sailors and industry leaders, and it has given me lots to think about for the future… look out SIBS, the Inclusive Community is coming!
Looking forward, I’m thrilled to be part of organising the RS Venture Connect World Championships, which kicks off in just over a week at Rutland Sailing Club. This event is about so much more than competition—it’s a celebration of the inclusive spirit of sailing. Bringing together sailors from around the world, this championship is a true testament to the progress we’re making. I’m working hard behind the scenes to ensure everything comes together seamlessly, and I can’t wait to see this vision come to life.
These past months have been a reminder of the power of resilience, the importance of community, and the necessity of advocating for what you believe in. Whether in moments of challenge or celebration, I’m grateful for the friends, colleagues, and supporters who have been part of this journey. There’s still so much to do, but I’m energised by what’s on the horizon.
Thank you for your continued support, and stay tuned—there are plenty more adventures to come, both on and off the water.
And as always, Happy Sailing!
